Bachelor of Science in Forest Science
Do you want to contribute to shape environmentally sound forest ecosystems? Work as a district forester or a natural hazards expert? Manage nature and landscape value-creation projects or manage a forest company? If you are thinking of a career in forestry or the environment, then a degree in Forest Science is perfect for you.
Forests have many functions: they protect from avalanches and rock fall, yield wood as building and other material and are a source of renewable energy. They serve as recreation areas for people and as habitats for plants and animals. They also store water and carbon. Well-educated experts who can reconcile the social, economic and ecological demands placed on forests are needed more than ever.
The BFH-HAFL bachelor’s degree is the only programme in Switzerland dedicated solely to forest science. In addition to a deep theoretical foundation, you will acquire knowledge and skills through directly relevant practice, for example on excursions in Switzerland and abroad, with case studies and while writing academic papers. This not only brings variety in your studies, but provides you with valuable experience which will be much appreciated by possible employers.
Creating career prospects
Once you graduate, you will be qualified to manage environmentally sound forest ecosystems at national and international level. Your possible areas of activity are as exciting as they are varied:
- managing nature reserve projects or larger forest companies
- working at management level in forestry services or nature conservation authorities
- working in specialist environmental or engineering firms
- taking on positions of responsibility in marketing organisations or industry associations
- working in education and consultancy
The Bachelor of Science in Forest Science also prepares you for a master’s degree.
Majors and additional qualifications
During your studies, you will specialise in at least one of three majors.
You can acquire additional career-related skills in a minor.
Customising your studies
The programme is completely modular. This gives you a wide range of options for your studies: generalist or more specialised, depending on your personal preference and career plans. You can choose to take modules from the other two majors or you can take a second major. The compulsory first major comprises 36 ECTS credits. As certain modules are common to two or all three majors, a second major comprises only 26 ECTS credits.
Module content is oriented to the skills required by the industry; modules are regularly reviewed and adapted to the latest advances in science and industry.
